Reconstructed Passenger List of the Britannia,
Compiled by Don Hayworth
While performing research to determine the sailing and
arrival dates of the Britannia, I discovered many passengers on the Britannia;
including some who died at sea. The discovery of so many passenger names
without really trying inspired me to try to compile a list of passengers who
sailed on the Britannia.
Preserved wills written, signed, and witnessed aboard
the Britannia provided many passenger names and most names of those who died.
The preparer of the will invariably died shortly after preparing his will and
the wills were probated shortly after the Britannia arrived in Philadelphia. All
witnesses to a will made aboard ship were clearly passengers. Wives and children
aboard the Britannia were often named in one’s will. Executors and trustees
named in the will were often aboard the Britannia, but some were friends or
family already in Pennsylvania. Heirs named in one’s will tended to be a mixed
bag of friends and family; some aboard ship, some already in Philadelphia, and
some back in England. Other names came from the letters of George Haworth. Some
of the names, especially children, are from documented family histories that
seem to be reliable sources.
All of the passengers on the Britannia were Quakers and
all seem to have emigrated from Lancashire and Yorkshire, except for a few
servants taken on board in Cork, Ireland. Many of the probable and possible
passengers were known to George Haworth and his family still in England and
definitely immigrated to Pennsylvania. However, I could not locate proof that
they were actually aboard the Britannia as opposed to another ship that arrived
in 1699 or a few years earlier or later.
After I concluded my research and posted an earlier
passenger list, I discovered that I was not the first to prepare a passenger
list for the Britannia. In 2009, William Brooke Fetters (see reference 17)
published a list of adult Britannia passengers in an appendix to his biography
of John Brooke/Brook/Brookes, a passenger on the Britannia. Since we used many
common sources, most of the passengers identified by Mr. Fetters were already
known to me. However, Mr. Fetters had access to a number of sources not known to
me and identified additional passengers now included in this revised list.
Including the passengers
identified by Mr. Fetters, I was able to compile a list of 145 “plus” names.
The plus denotes an unknown number of children
of two families referred to only as “my children” in the will of their father.
Of these 145 “plus” names, I consider 125
“plus” of them to be “proven passengers” on
the Britannia. An additional 6 names I consider to be “probable passengers”. The
remaining 14 names are categorized as “possible passengers”. The names of 38 who
died at sea or shortly after arrival have also been identified. Note, however,
that all “proven passengers” should be considered proven to my personal
satisfaction; not necessarily proven in accordance with recognized genealogical
standards in all case.
We know that there were more than 200 passengers aboard
the Britannia and that about 75 died at sea or ashore shortly after arrival.
Most of the unidentified probably fall into one of the following categories:
1.
Indentured
servants – Many well-to-do men with large
families were aboard the Britannia. Most probably had a large number of
servants, yet only a very few servants have been identified. Servants are seldom
named in wills and seldom wrote wills.
2.
Wives
of men
who survived the voyage – Women seldom
wrote wills and are seldom identified unless their husbands died and left a
will.
3.
Children of
men who survived the voyage – Children
never wrote wills, except possibly some older children, and they are seldom
identified unless their father died and left a will.
4.
Men of lesser
means who survived the voyage - If a man
survived the voyage he probably did not write a will aboard the Britannia.
Unless he was considered a man of some importance, a close friend, or a relative
he would not have been called upon to witness a will or serve as an executor or
trustee.
It
is my hope that this list will prove useful to others trying to trace their
Quaker ancestors. It is also my hope that others will revise and update this
list to make it as accurate and complete as possible by adding and removing
names when there is evidence to substantiate revisions.
The two additional names are: Gabriel Barnes and Jonathan Cowper (other members of his family are on the list).
