A Tribute to Wilbur A Haworth Jr.
In
late October 1950, the U.S. Military
became aware that there were Chinese Forces starting to show up in battles along
side of the North Korean Forces. By late November the U.S. Forces including both
the First Marine Division and the Army's 31st Infantry Regiment,
Wilbur's unit, were being overwhelmed by mass attacks consisting of tens of
thousands of Chinese Troops swarming across the Chinese Border . By November 28th,
Wilbur's Regiment, consisting of 3,000 men, was under sever attack by two
Chinese divisions, some 17,000 troops and by November 30th, Wilbur's
unit was totally over run by hoards of Chinese Troops swarming out of the hills.
Military records show that during that 24 hour time period, 34 members of
Wilbur's unit were listed as MIA and later declared KIA.
The
record further shows that more American casualties were listed on that
particular day than any other given day during the entire Korean war which waged
on for another 3 years. It is most likely that all of the remains of those men
are still at that battle site in
North Korea, as the U.N. forces never again
regained that territory.
May God Bless these brave men and may they rest in peace.
