DEPARTURE, CROSSING, AND ARRIVAL OF BRITANNIA

  ·    The “Record of Friends Travelling in Ireland, 1656-1765”

    reported the Britannia arrival in Cork Ireland on 20 May 1699.

   (Crossing from Liverpool to Cork would have been 2 or 3 days.)

  1699 3 mo [May] 20. Thos. Musgrave and wth him his

  own and many other families of Friends arrivd here from

  Liverpool took in provisions & were bound for America.

·       The average crossing time for a 17th century ship against

        the prevailing westerly winds was 8 weeks.

        Provisions for an expected voyage of 8 weeks

        would run low when stretched to 14 weeks.

·       The Britannia arrived in Philadelphia 24th of 6th

         month (Aug) 1699, 13 weeks and 4 days after leaving Cork.
