part in public affairs, being one of the organizers of Warren County, Iowa, and
one of the first school commissioners. He was also a member of the Board of
Supervisors for several years. He was a member of the Society of Friends and a
leader and an adviser of his neighborhood.

During the winter of 1869-70 he was converted in a Friend's seating at

four children, united with the Friend's church and remained a faithful member until his death.
When a child he came with his parents to what is now Vermillion Co., Illinois, where he resided
until the year 1846 when he moved into what is Warren County, Iowa, with his father's family.
He moved to Scotts Mills,

and sixty acres of land seven miles east of the present city of Indiananola, Iowa, this land
remaining in his possession until his removal to Oregon.
Soon after their settlement in
a saw sill near their farms and a little later a flouring mill was built. He with his father Samuel, attending
to the grinding of flour while his brother John H. sawed the lumber. This mill was the first steam mill in
that part of the state and was known far and wide as the "Haworth Mill". The settlers coming for many
miles with their grists to be made into flour to be exchanged. The lumber manufactured here became
the building material for every farm house, barn and bridge within a radius of twenty miles.
During the organization of

County as rendering various public services. He was a juror in the first criminal trial held
in Warren County, Iowa, the verdict being $12.50 and costs and forty-eight hours in jail.
He served as
He was a prime factor in the planning, building and financial support of Ackworth Academy,
an institution under the guidance of Friends at which place were educated many of the children
of his own family and those of his neighbors. This school of which he long served as a trustee
was for twenty-five years a local center of education. Aside from his early life as a miller he,
with his brother John H., were extensive farmers and stockmen, employing a number of men
and furnishing a considerable local market for all kinds of farm products. His children are:

energy to all good causes; was a trustee of
many years, supporting it financially with a liberal hand. He was known in his part of the County as
George of Linn Grove, the name of his immediate neighborhood, which originated because of a large
basswood grove situated partly on his farm. He was an Invalid for the last two years of his life,
suffering intensely, but through it all he manifested a Christian patience and fortitude. On the 6th
of December 1900 he died and was
